The deceit of self-esteem
Very telling quote:
“We could focus on the latest worrisome news in education: the results of an international test released last week that show American 15-year-olds don’t know much about science and are falling behind their peers in other industrialized nations. But why get depressed? There is an aluminum foil lining: The test also found that our teens don’t let their ignorance bother them. They may not know as much as students in Finland, Canada or New Zealand, but they think they do. When asked to rate their own scientific abilities, they put themselves at the top with their better-educated peers. This is the real trend in American education. No one can match us when it comes to self-esteem.” —Los Angeles Times
Snitching
It never ceases to amaze me what the students at my school choose to spout off over.
Today, I was walking up the stairs on my way to my third period class and a student had his cell phone out (a no-no). I asked him to put it away (vs. confiscating it like I’m supposed to do). After continuing on his way (and ignoring me), I pressed the issue to which he told me to get out of his face.
Later that same day, I walked out of my class only to see this same student speaking with the hall monitor who sits directly outside my room. Well, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity and so I asked the teacher the student’s name. He told me which prompted the student to launch into this tiring series of invectives and obscenities as he walked away from us. Whether they were directed at me, my teacher friend or both of us was uncertain since we were standing together. Irrelevant, I suppose.
In the end, I did write up the student and plan to speak with his grade-level team leader tomorrow. What shocked me is what started this whole sordid ordeal—his inflammatory response to me asking him to put away his phone. What it turned into, for me, was an internal monologue about what strange guidelines governing what gets classified as snitching in students’ minds.
Frankly, I can’t say I relate at all to this particular perception of snitching. I have had conversations about snitching on an abstracted level with students while we’re in class and they are working. For me it comes down to holding people responsible for their actions. I have to say that even when the students see my point they still consider it snitching. Baffling.
I have also gotten into discussions about this topic with other urban school teachers (since it doesn’t seem to factor in nearly as much for teachers in suburban districts). Not surprisingly, some of my colleagues throw the “culture” card thinking that just because “it’s the way of the street” that such a thing makes it proper or true.
Anyone want to share from his/her own experiences?
Traditions
My wife and I just finished watching White Christmas. It’s a tradition of ours this time of the year. What a great movie! We also watched this brief retrospective with Rosemary Clooney. I have to admit that there was something sad about watching it. Maybe it was the fact that all of the main players have died, or perhaps it was the fact that Danny Kaye wanted to be closer to Bing Crosby but Crosby just wasn’t the type of man to allow many to get close to him. Vera Ellen was just an incredible dancer.
I highly recommend the DVD which was also packaged with It’s a Wonderful Life. We haven’t watched It’s a Wonderful Life yet. I’ll let you know about the version that came in this package.
Ok, I got the box …
Apple sent me the box for me to send in my MacBook to get the cracked case fixed (and, hopefully, the flickering screen). They sent it in a couple of days which they said they would but I didn’t expect them to. LOL. I spoke to my IT person at school and he gave me a temporary laptop yesterday. My school uses Dells, but my IT guy set my Mac up for me and said it wasn’t a problem for me to use that if I wanted to; which I preferred. I think I got my wireless set up on the Dell correctly. I’ll check before I go into work today just to make sure.
I’m hoping this repair works out okay. Stuff like this just makes me nervous. I really dread sending my laptop away, but I guess that’s the only way I’m going to get it fixed.
Hopeful
Last Thursday and (less so) Friday, I can honestly say I really enjoyed teaching my art classes. I normally struggle with the fact that my classes seem more filled with frustration than satisfaction. That’s primarily from the fact I deal with discipline issues so much. Yet, now that the students are starting to understand that I mean it when I give them deadlines and not following those deadlines affects their grade they are asking to come in during off-class times to work. Yes, it uses up my lunch, duty and prep periods, but the kids are focused during those periods and get stuff done.
I’m hopeful to have at least one day like that. Not too much to ask, eh?
